School and local officials gathered at the municipal center on Tuesday, May 24 for the annual Military Appreciation Luncheon. Six members of the Class of 2016 were recognized for enlisting into the military after graduation. Each was presented a citation from the Connecticut General Assembly, a military challenge coin, and a military cord for graduation. Members of the Southington High School jazz band filled the municipal center meeting room with music, while school and town officials took their seats at tables adorned with blue table cloths and American flags.
On Tuesday, May 24, six seniors from the Class of 2016 were honored at the annual Military Appreciation luncheon for enlisting in the United States military after graduation. Alexis Stohmal and Aiden Chubet will be entering the United States Navy. Nikko Stulpin will enter the United States Army, while Nicole Calver, Charles Foulk IV, and Aron Zamifino will enter the United States National Guard.
The students were presented with a military cord from SHS Principal Brian Stranieri and the Southington High School administration. Each of the six seniors will wear the red, white, and blue cord during commencement ceremonies in June.
The event included remarks by members of the Board of Education (BOE) and Superintendent of Schools Timothy Connellan, along with performances by the high school jazz band, while enlistees, alumni, veterans, and families enjoyed lunch from CC Carvers.
“We thank you for your decision to serve our country,” said BOE Vice Chair Terri Carmody. “You will always be part of the town of Southington.”
The American Legion Kiltonic Post 72 gave each enlistee a military challenge coin, a certificate, a blue star banner for their parents to keep at home, and a pocket flag.
The annual luncheon is held each year as part of a partnership with Southington schools and the Veterans’ Committee.
“One of the strongest partnerships the Board of Education has is with our veterans,” said BOE Chairman Brian Goralski.
Superintendent of Schools Timothy Connellan said “our veterans are completely generous with their time” and are always willing to speak with students, offering advice and information on military service.
For those who were unable to attend the event, photos of the students have been placed in a display case at the entrance of the municipal center. Each graduate is pictured with their military cords.
