Secondo gives a speech during a recent town event. The Chamber president and CEO has been a fixture for the past 12 years, but he’s stepping down at the end of this month.

By TAYLOR HARTZ
STAFF WRITER

The “Suddington” sign hangs like a good-natured joke on the conference room wall at the Chamber of Commerce. His love for the town was embraced and ridiculed during a recent chamber Roast of their outgoing president and CEO.

For more than a decade, Art Secondo has been the face of Southington’s growing business community. Sometimes funny, sometimes controversial, but always colorful and hard-working, Secondo has been a fixture at ribbon-cuttings and local events.

Now, after 12 years of serving as president and CEO of the local chamber, the man affectionately called “Mr. Southington” will soon be stepping down.

Chamber Vice President Dave Pestillo said that Art’s love for the town was always evident, and that will be hard to replace as the chamber begins the search for Secondo’s replacement.

“Art absolutely loves Southington. He eats Southington. He breathes it. He really loves this town,” said Pestillo, who thinks Secondo’s town pride really helped the chamber grow in size and visibility– a goal Secondo had right from the start.

Secondo, a life-long Southington resident, served his community as a restaurant manager, sports bar owner, radio commentator, and newspaper editor, before accepting the title of Chamber of Commerce President and CEO in October 2003.

The 10-year Town Council veteran and author of community column “Second Look,” has voiced his opinion on Southington’s traditions, politics, and town pride for since the 1960s.

Secondo copyFollowing his membership in the Chamber as owner of the Hall of Fame Lounge and Marketing Director at Chancellor Gardens Assisted Living, Secondo took on the leadership role as a way to impact cooperation and commerce between businesses in his community.

Influenced both by his work as a business owner and member of the media, he grew membership in the Chamber by 241 members over his 12 years in the office, finishing with a record 535 members.

As president, Secondo said his priority was to improve the image of the Chamber, bringing a positive perspective to Southington’s “blue-collar” profile and “old-fashioned style of doing things.”

A community without a Chamber is similar to a train without an engine,” said Secondo, who thinks passion has been the fuel for his success. “I’ve been fortunate to be driven with a passion for my work, especially at the Chamber where clients could see and feel my love for the town.”

During his tenure, Secondo said he worked to showcase the advantages offered to members of the chamber, reduce events that drew little town interest, and market a new brand for the chamber with a series of engaging and beneficial community events.

During his presidency, the Chamber was involved with the annual Pizza Fest, Wing Fest, Italian Festival and Apple Harvest, drawing hundreds of residents to festivals to enjoy local food and vendors.

Events such as Chamber In The Morning, the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner and yearly downtown walk-thru allowed the Chamber to communicate concerns and ideas to town officials, while the annual Golf Tournament, speaking engagements and mall discount cards offered members an opportunity to network and promote their businesses.

The growth of the Chamber under Secondo’s presidency has helped promote business in town with a known presence of the chamber, said Chairman Paul Armor.

Crediting Secondo’s creation of the annual downtown walk-thru with strong relations between the Chamber and Town Council, Armor said the event has helped chamber leaders and town officials work together to “help the town be more business friendly and attract more customers and clients to the businesses that are in town.”

Pestillo said Secondo’s good reputation and many contacts town-wide helped increase the chamber’s size and therefore its impact on the community.

Though the vice president only worked under Secondo for three of his 12 years, Pestillo said that the chamber will reflect on his presidency fondly, and work to continue the progress Secondo achieved.

“Looking back it was a great ride,” said Pestillo, “and we’re really looking forward to moving ahead.”

In addition to continuing to grow membership and stay active in the community, Pestillo said the chamber will move forward with initiatives supported by Secondo. They plan to continue his support for building a new website and encouraging an electronic presence of the chamber, a process started by the board three months ago with Secondo’s backing.

While Armor felt that things will change as they begin the search for new leadership, the overall mission of the chamber to promote business in Southington will only move forward with the progress, dedicated membership and visibility built and maintained by Secondo.

Honored at this year’s annual dinner, Secondo asked Chamber members, community leaders and Southington residents not to mourn his resignation, because he has promised not to go anywhere.

“My goal is to continue to stay active in Southington, continue to preach of its amenities, and to do as much as I can to continue to have the town remain a wonderful place to live for,” said Secondo.

School reunion

Southington-State Senator Joe Markley (R-16) and State Representative David Zoni (D-81) announced that they will be hosting a reunion for graduates of Milldale Elementary School on Saturday, July 18. The event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. at 34 Clark Street, Milldale, the former site of the school.

The legislators are both graduates of the school which was disbanded in the early eighties. Physical education teacher Marcia Phelps, and Southington Fire Chief Buddy Clark, also Milldale graduates, will join the legislators in hosting the event.

The Milldale School operated in Southington from 1921 to 1980, but it was demolished in 1996.

“Milldale Elementary was a special place,” Senator Markley said in a release from the state democrats. “The teachers there laid the foundation of my education, and I made friends who I still have to this day. We were all sad to see it close in 1996, but this reunion is sure to bring back fond memories and rekindle old friendships. I hope everyone who can attend, does attend.”

Students at Flanders Elementary School will be welcomed back to school with a brand new playground, as the winners of a contest sponsored by Colgate and Shoprite.

Due to their participation in the TerraCycle Recycling program, Flanders was eligible to compete for the $40,000 playground, and came out on top with more than 5,500 votes collected via email.

The Flanders Parent Teacher Organization spearheaded the four-month competition against schools from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland ranking in the top 10.

The goal of the contest was to earn “playground credits” by obtaining online votes from different email addresses each day.

Students were sent home with a sheet to collect up to thirty email addresses each,

and every classroom in the school earned the PTO sponsored incentive, a popsicle party, for collecting at least 275.

Flanders PTO vice president Suzanne Whitehead received a call on July 7, informing her that their collection efforts had been successful, with their total surpassing a close competitor from New York.

Whitehead said that, when it came to collecting signatures, “everyone in school was on board,” and Flanders felt the support from across the community.

“Every school came together to help us,” said Whitehead, who shared that other schools in town sent in their mailing lists, and town manager Garry Brumback and Superintendent Timothy Connellan sent emails to their own mailing lists regarding the contest.

Flanders has been recycling ink cartridges and juice pouches with TerraCycle,

the New Jersey based recycling company that advocates for environmental awareness and education. The playground, according to the TerraCycle website, will be made from recycled oral care waste.

Installation of the new playground is expected to begin in the fall, after a representative from TerraCycle consults with Principal Patricia Mazzarella and Peter Romano, Director of Operations for Southington public schools.

The new playground will be a welcome addition to the recreation area at Flanders.

Currently, only 40 students can fit on the playground at once. With more than 300 students in the school, the extra play space will be put to good use.

A vigil is being planned for two Southington students, Annmarie Olender, 16, and Olivia Fusco, 14, who were victims in a fatal accident yesterday afternoon.

According to state police, a Hundai Accent carrying the two students crashed on I-84 eastbound, just west of the Queen Street exit at approximately 2:50 p.m. The car lost control and overturned in the medium between the eastbound and westbound lanes.

The accident caused backups on I-84 until about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening while emergency personnel tried to clear the accident. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Superintendent Timothy Connellan released a message this morning informing parents of the tragedy and that students are organizing a vigil to be held on the Southington High School softball field, today, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“We lost two young members of our community and our Southington Public Schools family in a tragic accident,” Connellan said in the release. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of these two students and we grieve with them for their loss.”

Support services will be available at two locations, Southington High School and the Southington Municipal Center through Youth Services. Support will be available from Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Counselors, social workers, and psychologists will be available for students, parents, and staff members who would like to avail themselves of the services.

“Students, parents, guardians, faculty, or staff members should feel free to reach out to administrators at either Southington High School or Kennedy Middle School or to staff at Southington Youth Services for additional or continued support,” Connellan said in the release.

Greg Ferry, the former Athletic Director in Avon and a long time counselor at Cheshire High School, has been named as Southington’s new athletic director.

By BRIAN JENNINGS
STAFF WRITER

Greg Ferry paced back and forth in front of the phone, waiting for the call, and thinking about the interview and the possibilities that lay before him.

“I think I wore out a good, 30-foot path in my house,” he said with a chuckle. “I was trying not to think about it and was giving myself every type of motivational talk…I kept thinking that I’m going to be the Southington athletic director.”

When the call came through, his phone rang out with the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.

“I saw the Southington phone number come up and I said to my wife, ‘Hon, this is it. My life could be changing for the better,’” said Ferry, the new athletic director for Southington schools. “I think I let out a scream of about a five on a scale of one to 10. That’s just who I am. I’m an emotional guy. I’m passionate, and I’m not going to hide from it.”

Ferry was selected, late on Thursday night, in a special meeting by the Board of Education. Now, the former Avon athletic director and long-time Cheshire High School counselor is replacing Eric Swallow. The position has been vacant since Swallow left in June after taking a position as the new athletic director of Norwich Free Academy.

“He is a young man that brings a lot of potential and excitement,” said Superintendent of Southington schools Tim Connellan. “I think that he’s going to be a wonderful athletic director. I predict that he is going to be the athletic director of the Southington public schools for the next 20 years and continue to build on the excellence that we have in programming. He’s going to have a huge impact on the students and all programs that we offer for students in that area.”

Ferry’s enthusiasm, vision, dedication, and sincerity are just some of the characteristics that stood out to Connellan and the board.

Greg Ferry, left, and his administrative assistant Lee McLean-Houle.

Greg Ferry, left, and his administrative assistant Lee McLean-Houle.

“He is incredibly well-organized and prepared,” said Connellan. “He comes from a much disciplined background, being a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy. He has served his country in active duty. I think he just brings all of those qualities to the table. That really comes across. He is very passionate about he does. He was so excited about this opportunity. and he feels that it’s such a great match for him and his family. We do, too.”

Ferry said that he was drawn to the position because of a number of important factors: the community, the town itself, the history of success on and off the field with it’s athletic programs, the quality of coaches, the leadership that is in place at the school, the chance to be close to where he grew up, and the opportunity to be close to his family.

“My background from playing, coaching experience, and leadership experience both in and out of the military is what really crafted my work skills,” he said.

Ferry is coming into a position that features a lot of recent success within the sports programs.

“I think the biggest thing when you go into a position like this is you can’t you go in thinking that you have to change all of this,” said Ferry. “I think the biggest thing is to be reflective. Take a hard, critical look a year into the position. Observe all the processes, look at all of the facilities, and then start developing the grand plan of how we’re going to get better.”

Ferry said that he really wants to focus on growing and sustaining excellence over a long period of time.

“It’s not like you’re coming into a place that has tons of issues,” said Ferry. “There are a lot of support and great coaches in place. There’s support in the community, and it’s very strong. How are we going to cultivate that and keep shooting to get better? If you get complacent, that’s when you start losing your edge. How are we going to keep that going? That’s what I’m looking at.”

Ferry’s other passions, besides sports, are wellness and fitness.

“I fell in love with lifting weights and conditioning, probably since I was in eighth grade,” he said. “That, I really get from my father.”

Ferry has walked the sports facilities at the high school and said that he wants to make the facilities the best that they can be, while also being safe for students and fiscally smart.

“We want to have our facilities be a model facility for the rest of the state to look at,” said Ferry. “That’s the grand vision and one that I think really needs to be looked at. How are we going to improve our fitness facility? Wellness is so important, not just for our student athletes, but all of our students. Right now, the physical space is there. How are we going to improve that and make it better?”

Ferry also has plans to bring booster clubs together in the town and possibly have an executive council, in which all the booster clubs can participate.

“Something that I would really like to do is be a part of the Southington Veterans Community,” he said. “I want to establish and develop the relationships that are in the town of Southington. I want to get our student athletes to understand and value the men and women that have served our country. I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to do that when I was a little bit younger.”

Ferry was born and raised in Cheshire. Growing up, he played football and baseball and was a captain, all-conference starter, and two-time, Class L State Champion on the Cheshire High School football team. After graduating from Cheshire High School in 1994, Ferry attended the United States Coast Guard in New London where he was also a four-year letterman and starting fullback for the football team, which won back-to-back conference championships and had two NCAA playoff appearances.

“We had a great core group of players from all over the country,” he said. “We rallied together and all had our different roles. It was a selfless team and we all put the team ahead of us. To win at a military academy is just very special because you have so many time constraints and commitments, but we all really valued being around one another and working together. That was one of the best experiences that I could possibly remember. ”

Ferry graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in government in May of 1998, but stuck around to start a coaching career in football there from 2000 to 2003 as the assistant varsity coach. He also served as an admissions officer and taught Nautical Science and leadership course to Officer Candidates at the Coast Guard Academy’s Leadership and Development Center.

After the Coast Guard, he returned to Cheshire where he became the assistant varsity football coach at Cheshire High School from 2003 to 2007 and again from 2009 to 2012. During his time at Cheshire, he also was the assistant softball coach from 2007 to 2010. In addition, he served one year as an assistant varsity football coach at Sheehan High School and two years at Xavier High School in Middletown.

Before taking the position with Southington High School, Ferry served as the athletic director of Avon High School since July 2014. He coordinated 28 sports teams and hired nine coaches during his first year on the job. Before that, he served an administrative internship at Cheshire High School for a little over a year.

Ferry had been a school counselor at Cheshire from 2003 to 2014. His educational background includes a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Connecticut in Storrs (2004) and a sixth year professional diploma in education leadership from the University of Bridgeport (2010).

Erik Bergland, left, and Madison Chapman were presented with the first SEF STEM scholarships.

Erik Bergland and Madison Chapman have been named recipients of the Southington Education Foundation’s inaugural scholarships, providing $1,000 to each awardee.

Bergland was awarded the SEF STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) Scholarship. He plans on studying applied mathematics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. In an essay, he relates that his greatest wish is to have the opportunity to study applied mathematics and use it to unveil the greatest mysteries of science.

Bergland was the Class of 2015 Salutatorian and has been honored with many academic awards. As a junior, he received the Rensselaer Medal awarded to the top mathematics student. He has also placed in essay contests displaying his skills in written expression. A well-rounded student, Bergland has been involved in activities such as “Urinetown,” a recent Drama Club presentation. He is also actively involved with community service and serves as a math tutor.

Madison Chapman was selected for the SEF Joseph V. Erardi, Jr. Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who has shown his or herself to be civic-minded and has demonstrated the desire to help school, community, and/or country.

Chapman has chosen to attend American University in Washington, D.C. with a double major in musical theater and either education or communication disorders. While at Southington High School, she attended the Greater Academy of the Arts and has been honored her theatre and vocal skills and her academic achievement.

Chapman has committed many hours to a variety of volunteer and community service projects. She has served as co-chair of the Winter Clothing Drive and been a continuing volunteer for the Salvation Army Benefit Performance. In her essay she shared the rewards of using her skills in vocals and choreography to connect with girls who struggle with communication skills.

“We had a large pool of candidates for these inaugural scholarships,” SEF scholarship chair Kelley Nolan-Maccione said in a press release. “However, we (the committee) felt Erik and Madison embody the spirit of the STEM and Joseph V. Erardi, Jr. scholarships, respectively.”

Bergland is the son of Robert and Lori Bergland. Chapman is the daughter of Christopher and Jill Chapman.

The SEF is a nonprofit organization founded in 2009 to support enriching and creative initiatives in education.  The STEM scholarship is one part of a Five-Prong Commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Past superintendent Joseph V. Erardi, Jr. was a catalyst for the formation of the foundation, and during his tenure he encouraged many to be active in the Southington community.

Southington Catholic

After many months of planning, organizing, preparing and furnishing the facility and hiring of teachers and staff, Southington Catholic School expects to open its doors for the first day of school on Thursday, Aug. 27. The school is designed for children in pre-K through eighth grade.

Most Rev. Leonard P. Blair, Archbishop of Hartford, will celebrate the opening with an official blessing and ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. on Aug. 23.

“Southington Catholic represents a merger of the finest in Catholic educational achievements, carrying forward the Christian teachings, traditions and history of its predecessor schools: St. Dominic Elementary School and St. Thomas School,” pastors Rev. Ronald May and Rev. Nicholas Melo said in a joint press release. “We thank the faculty, staff, steering committee, sub-committees, volunteers and parents who have worked together, and the leadership of the Office of Catholic Schools, in bringing us to this exciting moment offering the Southington community and beyond an enhanced opportunity for the educational and spiritual development of our children.”

The school mission statement reads, “Southington Catholic School is a Christ-centered nurturing learning community that fosters Catholic faith based values in our students while achieving academic excellence. Our students will become responsible and faith-filled leaders with creative minds, compassionate hearts and the courage to act on our beliefs.”

The ribbon cutting will take place in front of Southington Catholic School at 133 Bristol Street in Southington. Refreshments will follow, and all are welcome to attend.

Hatton Elementary School was presented with a grant from Tanger Outlets in the amount of $1,800 in mid-June. The grant was submitted by Amber Smith, who is a third grade teacher in Southington and also a parent of two boys who attend Hatton School. The TangerKIDS Grants program is designed to assist schools by providing grants for special projects, needed programs, or equipment. The Hatton grant was called “Basketball for All.”

The money will go toward purchasing an adaptive basketball hoop system from ProDunk Hoops. The basketball will allow for all students to participate in the game of basketball.

Smith said that her inspiration for writing the grant came from her son, Ryan, who has cerebral palsy. Ryan’s favorite thing to do is play basketball, and the adaptive hoop is easily adjustable to allow for students of all abilities and ages to play.
