The Southington Education Foundation (SEF) awarded $2,000 to local students this month for the pursuit of high education. Emily Maciejewski, salutatorian for the Southington High School (SHS) Class of 2016, and Sarah Lamb, were both chosen as recipients for the organization’s annual scholarships.

The SEF, established in 2009 to support creative initiatives in education, awarded Maciejewski with the SEF STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Scholarship, which is awarded to students who have excelled in STEM courses at SHS and plan to pursue a career in a STEM related field.

Maciejekewski participated in Project Lead the Way at SHS and will be attending the University of Connecticut to study mechanical engineering, working toward a career in aerospace or computer science.

Lamb was the recipient of the Joseph V. Erardi, Jr., award, named for the former Superintendent of Public Schools. This scholarship is given to a “civic minded” students who gives back to their community. Lamb, who volunteered with the Southington Town Wide Effort to Promote Success (STEPS) and Relay for Life, will be attending Quinnipiac University to study business.

“We had a large pool of candidates for both scholarships,” said SEF Scholatship chair Kelley Nolan-Maccione, in a press release, “We felt Emily and Sarah embody the spirit of the STEM and Joseph V. Erardi, Jr. scholarships.”
