Each year, four students are recognized for their dedication to community service at a statewide meeting of the YMCA of Greater Hartford.
This year, Southington High School senior Samantha Butlier, was awarded one of four Wesley A. Kuhry Youth Citizenship Awards for Community Service by United Technologies Corporation (UTC) and the YMCA.
The award is given in honor of Wesley A. Kuhry, a former president of Sikorsky Aircraft and former senior vice president of UTC. Kuhry was “known for his outstanding volunteer and professional leadership,” the YMCA said in a press release.
Butlier, now an SHS alumni, has been an active volunteer at the Southington Care Center, which provides short and long term rehabilitation and care to senior residents in Southington, since her sophomore year of high school.
She also volunteers with the New Haven-based organization, Abraham’s Tent, sponsored by the Columbus House non-profit in New Haven. The organization provides emergency shelter and housing assistance to men.
Butlier received the award at the annual meeting of the YMCA of Greater Hartford in early June.
The award honors participants at YMCA programs, from ages 15 to 20, who “have strongly demonstrated an ongoing commitment to volunteer service,” said the YMCA in a release.
The organization said recipients possess the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, and serve as positive role models in their community.
