The Southington Education Foundation (SEF) is looking for the town’s best spellers for the sixth annual SEF Community Spelling Bee. Last year, the “Wanna Bees,” with Dave Pestillo, Joe Peccerillo, and John Zimmerman won that honor. It is now time to put them to the challenge. Who will win the trophy this year?

On Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m., teams made up of local citizens, politicians, businesses, educators, police, fire, and other public officials will compete. The event will be held at the Southington High School Auditorium, and the proceeds will help foster educational excellence for our town’s public school children.

Steve Proffitt will serve as Bee Master. Judges for the evening will include Southington Superintendent of Schools Timothy Connellan and SPS Language Arts Coordinator Stephanie Lawlor.

Officals expect 25 to 30 teams to participate. Although teams are primarily adults from the community, high school clubs and groups may also register for a lesser fee.

Each team will consist of three spellers. Costumes, themes, and mascots are encouraged. Entry fees are tax deductible, and participation is $100 per person or $300 per team. Participants will write their words on a white board and confer with their teammates before presenting their answer to the judges.

Admission is free, but donations of nonperishable food items will benefit Southington Community Services.

Money raised from this Spelling Bee will continue to support grant opportunities and the mission of the SEF. To register a team or make a donation, visit southingtoneducationfoundation.org or Jan Galati at SEF.Donations@gmail.com.
